The opening of the exhibition SKICE i SLIKE DALMACIJE (sketches and paintings of Dalmatia) went well yesterday. Thank you to friends, family , and those who love the arts for dropping by and supporting. The works are well-received by the local public. I've got lots of compliments, and pleased that this happened here in Split.
The exhibition showcases my work since 2011, when I first visited Split. All the sketches and paintings of Split and the surrounding places in Dalmatia have been selected for display here.
It is like bringing them back home to where they belong.

The exhibition showcases a selection of sketches and paintings made in and around Split by Davisi Boontharm.

Since 2011, Davisi has consistently made sketches and paintings during her summer visits and even from afar. Through her work, she aims to capture the essence of the places by portraying scenes of everyday life, townscapes, seascapes, and people while experimenting with various media, techniques, and formats. This exhibition at City Library Marko Marulić Split is the first time that her artworks on Split and Dalmatia will be shared for the enjoyment of the local audience. The collection consists of four series of work:
1. Picturesque of Split and Vis: a series of poster-size paintings in black and white brushwork, showcasing the beautiful scenic views of these two places.
2. Yellow & Indigo: watercolour of the facade of Vis looking from the sea.
3. Orihon sketchbooks: a collection of Moleskine Japanese albums and some handmade concertina books filled with sketches that depict different facets of Dalmatia, including the scenes from Split, and the journeys to the towns and nearby islands.
4. 100 postcard-sized watercolour sketches in which Davisi explores the concept of “haiku” in painting, capturing various summer urban lives through observations of café terraces, busy beaches, and a lively riva.

The opening of the exhibition is on 24th June at 18:00.

"Hiroto's collection of irons" features a handmade

"Hiroto's collection of irons" features a handmade orihon with sketches of vintage irons. This was created as a special gift to thank him for his hospitality during our first three weeks in Tokyo. These irons came from various parts of the globe, representing different eras in the history of this household tool that tidies up clothes. Each item is a testament to thoughtful design, focusing on heat retention, weight optimization, and shape craftsmanship for maximum functionality while also appealing to our aesthetic sensibilities. Although they are common objects of everyday life, observing and drawing the entire collection makes me aware of their significance.

The opening of the exhibition "from journeys and from home" went smoothly thanks to the hard work of all who brought support.

Thank you to the friends and visitors who dropped by these days; I did enjoy each walk through the sketchbooks with you, and your encouragement means a lot.

Thank you to all the Shinkenchiku-sha + POST bookstore staff who assisted throughout the journey.

The setup of the exhibition ... from journeys and from home... 旅から、家からat Shinkenchiku-sha Aoyama House went very well thanks to the great team from co+labo Sano, Keio University.
My special thanks go to Sano-san, Miyatake-san, and Lari-san, who brought great support and positive energy.

Miyatake-san helped design the paper shelves specifically for the orihon, which used very simple techniques to install without damaging the wall; a really creative invention.
Lari-san and her magic network brought the special task force of international students in Tokyo to lend a hand for the setup. Big thanks to Jessica Ilunga, JaeJin Kim, Jun Onuki, Leticia Misaki Matsuda, Matteo Lucanto, and Tim Hornung for their hard work.

Yesterday and today I welcomed the very first visitors who dropped by for the exclusive preview: Hiroto-san, Seijima-san, Mita-san, Chizuru-san, Masami-san, Suji-san and Amena-san.

Darko also gave huge moral support and nice photographs.

This is a mini-size 6-page accordion sketchbook, bought in Tokyu Hands.
I made speedy sketches of the Yakushiji temple pagoda, the Toshodaiji temple drum tower, the Kasuga Taisha shrine sake brewery, and the Todaiji temple.

Temples and shrines in Japan are usually quite elaborate architecture; I usually am drawn to more modest ones.

I haven't done the line sketches for a long time. They are quite "busy," but I hope I have captured the essence.

A study of deers on a winter day

A side trip to Nara in the middle of winter.
It is a cold and drizzling day, and my hand freezes.

These sacred deers are so kind and gentle unless you annoy them. They always come close to humans and bow for food. We can pet them, talk to them and sketch them ;-). That's what I did.

Their colour blends nicely with the winter landscape. They move elegantly; and their eyes are beautiful.

This is the first time in my life sketching deers... live. They are good sitters.

The raindrops dilute my drawings, make it more interesting.

For over a decade, Davisi has been sketching and painting in orihon format sketchbooks. Beginning with a basic carnet de voyage, she has cultivated her passion for this format and conducted numerous experiments on different themes. Her subjects include everyday life and specific memories tied to places. She has captured street scenes and façades from both places where she lives and the places of which she has a fond memory. Her sketches not only depict reality, but also encapsulate the atmosphere - and something beyond it. Her sketchbooks are like an autobiography that visually narrates her journeys, her home and her life.

One of the series featured here in this post is "street with no name", a sketch of a nameless street in Midorigaoka, Tokyo where she called home. It is an attempt to safeguard memories and record the lived experience.

For this exhibition at Shinkechiku-sha, a part from the selected sketchbook, there is also a display of her recent experiments with paintings of kokeshi, the traditional Japanese wooden dolls from her collection. These works attempt to evoke emotions in an ordinary object. Trying to achieve more with less, she reuses old papers, applies simple techniques with a restricted colour palette.
